TMU President Chien-Huang Lin Leads Delegation to the U.S., Attending Alumni Gatherings in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, the BIO International Convention, and Visiting Johns Hopkins University and Caltech
Taipei Medical University (TMU) President Chien-Huang Lin (Pharmacy, Class 26), Vice President Fei-Peng Lee (李飛鵬) (Medicine, Class 15), Vice President Chieh-Hsin Wu (吳介信) (Pharmacy, Class 23), Director of Public Affairs Wei-Wen Su (蘇維文), TMU Alumni Association President Kuei-Ling Hsieh (謝桂鈴) (Evening Pharmacy, Class 18), and TMU Physician Association Secretary-General Yung-Feng Cheng (鄭永豐) (Medicine, Class 22) visited the U.S. from June 1 to June 8, 2019. The delegation attended local alumni association events in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. Additionally, they visited Johns Hopkins University, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and participated in the BIO International Convention.
The TMU Alumni Association in North America - Washington D.C. Chapter held its gathering at the Culture Center of TECO in Washington D.C. at noon on June 2. Distinguished attendees included Advisor Tsung-Hsi Wang (王宗曦), Health Representative of the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW); Director Shih-Chi Chen (陳世池) of the Culture Center of TECO; Ambassador Njabuliso Busisiwe Gwebu of the Kingdom of Eswatini to the U.S.; and Dean Nai-Wen Kuo (郭乃文) of the TMU College of Public Health.
Vice President Fei-Peng Lee (李飛鵬) updated the alumni on TMU's recent developments, noting that the university has grown significantly from what alumni might remember. The ongoing construction of the Shuang Ho Campus and the Taipei Cancer Center will further elevate overall teaching and research capacities. Alumni were delighted and proud to witness their alma mater's growth. Chapter President Yu-Ching Peng (彭郁靜) (Nutrition, Class 6) thanked the university team for their visit and presented them with exquisite souvenirs, ensuring everyone had a joyful and memorable gathering.
On the evening of June 6, TMU alumni in the Philadelphia area held a dinner hosted by Dr. Min-Hsiung Ko (柯敏雄). Attendees included first-generation Medicine alumni Dr. Min-Hsiung Ko (柯敏雄) and his wife, and Dr. Chang-Chi Lee (李常吉) and his wife; second-generation Medicine alumni Dr. Chia-Sheng Su (蘇嘉盛) and Dr. Chi-Tung Tsai (蔡啓東) and their wives; as well as Dr. Hsin-Cheng Chen (陳信誠) (Medical Technology, Class 18), who currently serves as the Director of the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Program at Capital Health System. During the dinner, Dr. Ko shared his life experiences. The alumni expressed strong support for President Lin and his team, admiring the university's wise perspectives and long-term plans. Dr. Hsin-Cheng Chen (陳信誠), who emigrated to the U.S. and has not returned to Taiwan for a long time, was pleasantly surprised by the invitation card sent by his alma mater. He expressed his willingness to contribute his expertise to assist TMU in cancer research exchanges and development.
On the evening of June 7, the TMU Alumni Association of North America and the TMU Alumni Association of Southern California co-hosted a dinner in Los Angeles. Attendees included former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Health Dr. Yuan-Ching Lin (林元清) (Medicine, Class 6), former MOHW Minister Wen-Ta Chiu (邱文達), Vice Superintendent of the Taipei Cancer Center Tsu-Yi Chao (趙祖怡), Convener of the Pediatric Oncology Team at the Taipei Cancer Center Dr. James Miser, and over 60 TMU alumni. President Chien-Huang Lin and his team briefed the alumni on TMU's recent achievements in teaching, research, industry-academia collaboration, and infrastructure, as well as future visions, receiving strong affirmation and support from the alumni present.
Kuei-Tang Weng (翁桂堂), Director of the Culture Center of TECO in Los Angeles, attended the dinner and delivered a speech. He recognized the outstanding career achievements of TMU alumni in the U.S., praising their proactive efforts in assisting the government with diplomatic affairs and caring for the health of expatriates. He also thanked the university delegation for participating in international conferences, connecting with alumni, and working hard for Taiwan's medical education. Southern California Alumni Association President Hsiao-Fen Chen (陳筱芬) stated that the alma mater's success is a shared glory for all alumni, expressing hope that alumni will generously donate to support TMU's development and help reach new heights.
During this period, the delegation also participated in the BIO International Convention in Philadelphia. At the convention, TMU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with AUM Biosciences (AUM), a Singapore-based oncology therapeutics company, to jointly develop and commercialize novel cancer treatments. On June 5, the delegation visited Johns Hopkins University, guided by Dr. Ie-Ming Shih (施益民) (Medicine, Class 23), the 2018 TMU Outstanding Alumnus in Academic Achievement. Dr. Shih currently serves as the Richard W. TeLinde Distinguished Professor and Co-Director of the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Program at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.
The delegation toured the Medical Campus and the Homewood Campus, including a visit to the FastForward innovation hub. FastForward is designed to effectively transfer technology from startups to the market and currently supports over 100 startups. TMU hopes to bring this valuable experience back to foster its own startup ecosystem. Furthermore, the delegation visited the university's international medical department, cancer center, bioengineering department, and educational research facilities to promote mutual development in teaching and research.
On the morning of June 7, recommended by Advisor Yuan-Ching Lin (林元清), the delegation visited the Medical Engineering Laboratory at Caltech and met with Provost Professor David Tirrell. Through this visit, they gained in-depth insights into the development of Caltech's accelerators, which will facilitate TMU in planning distinct future development strategies.
