TMU Delegation Visits the U.S.: Strengthening Alumni Bonds and Advancing Smart Healthcare Collaboration
[October 2024] — In a mission to strengthen global ties and foster international healthcare innovation, a high-level delegation from Taipei Medical University (TMU), led by Chairman Ray-Jade Chen, President Mai-Szu Wu, Vice President Kang-Yun Lee, and Director of Public Affairs Bei-Zhen Hsu, embarked on a nine-day visit to the United States on October 1, 2024. They were joined by Yi-Hua Chen, Dean of the College of Public Health, on October 5. The visit focused on deepening connections with overseas alumni and exploring strategic partnerships with world-renowned academic and medical institutions.
Bridging Generations: Alumni Gatherings Across the States
The TMU Office of Public Affairs, in collaboration with local alumni associations, organized three major events in Northern California, Southern California, and Washington D.C., drawing enthusiastic participation from alumni and their families.
Northern California (Oct 2): Hosted by President Shan-Ying Lee, the event welcomed over 40 alumni. Distinguished guests included Director Hung-Wei Yen (Science and Technology Division) and Director Chin-Feng Tung (Education Division) from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO).
Southern California (Oct 4): Held at the San Gabriel Country Club and hosted by President Hsiao-Fen Chen, the gathering was a vibrant celebration with over 40 attendees.
Washington D.C. / Baltimore (Oct 6): Organized by alumnus Chun-Ming Tseng and President Yi-Min Shih at Empress East. Alumnus Jui-Cang Hsiao presented two paintings, "Bright Future" and "The Leader," symbolizing TMU's enduring spirit in the global medical field.
During these gatherings, Chairman Chen highlighted TMU's "Smart Transformation," including the successful integration of IT systems across three affiliated hospitals. President Wu provided updates on campus infrastructure, while VP Lee and Director Hsu invited alumni to participate in future initiatives, such as the construction of the second student dormitory and international talent cultivation programs.
Forging Elite Partnerships: Visits to Leading Medical Institutions
The delegation visited several prestigious institutions to exchange insights on cutting-edge medical trends:
UCSF & Stanford University: The team met with Academician Kon-Sang Wong and Professor Jason Wang to discuss digital pathology, campus development, and startup collaborations.
City of Hope: As a steadfast partner of TMU, City of Hope showcased its patient-centered philosophy through tours of its pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and newly opened patient lodging.
AHMC Healthcare: Vice President Dr. Bruce Ling and CEO Dr. Wen-Ta Chiu shared insights on the post-pandemic U.S. healthcare system and discussed continuing student internship programs.
UCI Health: The delegation explored the "3A Model" (Ambulatory, Acute, and Advanced) at UCI's new campus. UCI officials expressed high praise for TMU's rapid AI integration and IT system upgrades.
NIH & NIEHS: Discussions focused on CRISPR gene-editing technology, precision health data, the exposome, and climate change health initiatives.
Kaiser Permanente: Arranged by Director Yao-Mao Chang (Health Division, TECRO), the visit focused on Kaiser's leadership in preventive medicine and personalized screening programs for high-risk patients.
A Vision for the Future
This successful visit not only solidified the emotional bond between TMU and its U.S.-based alumni but also paved the way for future academic and clinical collaborations. By engaging with world-class institutions, TMU continues to advance its mission of excellence in global medical service and education.
