TMU Chairman Wen-Chang Chang Visits Washington D.C., Meets with NIDA/NIH, and Gathers with North American Alumni
In October 2014, Taipei Medical University (TMU) Chairman of the Board of Trustees Wen-Chang Chang traveled to Washington, D.C., representing TMU to discuss collaborative projects with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) under the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Prior to his departure, he requested Director of Public Affairs Wei-Wen Su (蘇維文) to contact the TMU Alumni Association in North America to help arrange a gathering on the evening of October 3 in Washington, D.C. The event brought together 40 North American alumni, providing a wonderful opportunity to share the latest updates from their alma mater.
Chairman Wen-Chang Chang is an alumnus of TMU's School of Pharmacy (Class 6). He holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Tokyo in Japan and serves as a TMU Chair Professor. As a distinguished alumnus who has served two terms as the president of the Tainan Alumni Association, his outstanding research on prostaglandins (PG) has earned him profound recognition. In 1986, he received the Outstanding Research Award from the National Science Council, followed by numerous other accolades. In 2004, he was bestowed the highest academic honor in Taiwan, being elected as an Academician of Academia Sinica. President of the TMU Medical Alumni Association in Japan Shu-Hsien Chen (陳書顯) respectfully referred to him as "the most deeply proud 'Senpai' (respected senior) of our TMU Alumni Association in Japan."
The Alumni Service Section of the Office of Public Affairs sought the assistance of former President of the TMU Alumni Association in North America Shu-Miao Ho (何淑妙) and President of the Washington D.C. Alumni Association Ya-Wen Hsiao (蕭雅文) to invite alumni to the dinner. Within a short period, 40 alumni registered for the event. Director Wei-Wen Su (蘇維文) specially prepared 40 souvenirs as welcome gifts for the North American alumni. Alumna Fen-Ying Chang (張芬瑩) invited Jui-Lien Fan (范瑞蓮) and her husband, while alumna Yu-Ching Peng (彭郁靜), who works at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), also attended to join the grand occasion. Alumnus Jui-Chang Hsiao (蕭瑞昌), who has a deep passion for oil painting, generously brought his artworks to share. He also prepared a small poster reading "Welcome Chairman Dr. Chang," which was signed on the back by all attending alumni and presented to Chairman Chang as a memorable keepsake.
Through this trip, Chairman Wen-Chang Chang and Director Wei-Wen Su (蘇維文) not only felt the enduring love and care that North American alumni have for their alma mater, but they also introduced TMU's latest developments, deeply moving the alumni. Lastly, heartfelt thanks go to former North American Alumni Association President Shu-Miao Ho (何淑妙) and current Washington D.C. Alumni Association President Ya-Wen Hsiao (蕭雅文) for swiftly connecting with the alumni. The warm transportation and full-day accompaniment provided by President Ya-Wen Hsiao (蕭雅文) and her husband were truly unforgettable. North American alumni are expected to visit their alma mater in the near future, further enhancing communication and interaction between the alumni and the university. 前北美校友會長何淑妙撰文～北醫大北美洲校友喜迎張文昌董事長歡聚華府
臺北醫學大學新任校友董事長張文昌院士，今年8月甫上任，10月3日晚間即經由華盛頓DC校友會會長蕭雅文及淑妙的安排，在華府會見當地40位校友。本次張董事長赴美有幾項重大任務，包括與美國NIH的NIDA洽談學術交流計畫及學習美國在此領域的推展，並拜會美國約翰霍普斯金大學醫學院（Johns Hopkins Medical School）。
張董事長趁公餘，抽出半天時間與當地校友聚餐，我與蕭會長精心安排，短短一星期內即召集了40人參加校友餐會，並由蕭會長央請協會會長及醫科校友黃都博、蔡潤瓊醫師夫婦親自接送由巴爾地摩與華府之間將近1小時的車程。他們不但不覺得辛苦，還感到相當榮幸，能與張董事長有段珍貴的相處時間，均感到獲益匪淺。
多位校友提前赴約，期盼與新任董事長一談母校近況及未來發展方向。晚間7時開始，由淑妙主持，提到蕭雅文會長用了近3個小時電話催生才有今天的聚會。短短一星期內，尤其又非週末，真是難能可貴，有些校友們更須與人調班、排除on-Call，參加此次難得之聚會。何會長還報告了上次聚會，黃文豪醫師大方展示他的攝影作品與校友們分享，此次，蕭瑞昌校友帶來了他的油畫作品，真是堪與畢卡索相比。以後每次聚會校友們不僅分享在事業上的成就，還可分享其他藝術上的發展。
在蕭會長介紹張董事長的學經歷時，所有在座校友均感與有榮焉，並為北醫大高興，有張文昌董事長來傳承李祖德董事長的不可能任務。張董事長致辭表示，北醫大由三間鐵皮屋發展至今，在臺北市與新北市有三家附屬醫院加起來有3,000床規模的大體系，校園景觀及學術發展皆進步神速，讓校友們個個覺得母校的今昔有天壤之別。
嚮往之大學，在詳細介紹了母校近況後，由蘇維文處長介紹校友近況，其中並有多位校友上台發表，大家相約要好好練習，下次將會給大家一個驚喜。餐會上，蕭雅文會長提供了頂級紅酒配上美味佳餚，校友們包括第1屆醫科、第18屆牙科、第1屆藥學系，以至護理系第10屆校友們均有感而發，以北醫人為榮。
席間，校友們也為前校長邱文達叫屈，學術非凡及謙恭之心為民服務，卻得到如此待遇。但是校友們更認為，邱部長的離職應該是北醫大之福氣，因為邱部長將重返北醫，再為北醫人貢獻他的專長，讓母校更上層樓。
張董事長表示，他雖未目睹2010年華府舉辦的北美洲校友年會盛況，但是已感受到校友的熱忱，承諾下次將與校長與多位院長共赴大華府舉辦的北醫校友年會，並期待明年校友們能返臺與母校共同歡慶55週年校慶。明年見！（文/何淑妙，前北美校友會長）
